This obscene price is about right. Here in CA, in the SF Bay Area, the scheduled tuneup can be 1K!! One thousand coconuts! As you mention, there is probably AT MOST, 200.00 dollars worth of parts in that tune up. However, it is the labor prices that makes the tune-up cost that much. The CHEAP labor rate in the SF area is $93.00!!! It can go all the way up to 120.00.
For the record. I had my one and last tune up ever at a dealer soon after the purchase my used car. They cut me a deal at a mere 732.00 for the 75K miles tune up. A week later, ONE WEEK ON THE CLOCK, the upper Radiator hose burst. Lesson: These clowns who do tune ups for a living do the least amount they can get away with. I doubt they even change fluids in the vast majority of places.
Get a Haynes manual, and start to take care of your car yourself. With the help of these boards, a collective brain trust, you can minimize your expenses while doing something fun on the weekends.
