in CA, part of the visual test involves plugging into the OBD2 port and checking for codes. At the same time, the tester checks all of the computer's internal memory locations (long-term fuel trim, long-term timing trim, etc.). If there is anything wrong, you fail. The problem is, whenever you clear the codes like I did, it clears all those memory locations too. When they check, they get "not ready" codes, and your car fails. So it takes some time for the trionic computer to reset all those long-term trims & status reports. Different cars take different amounts of time. My Nissan Sentra's OM, for example, gives a very specific series of driving conditions that must occur to reprogram the ECU. Unfortunately the 900's does not. I'm hoping someone knows if the car is slower than average or faster (Fords are notoriously slow - you can fail a smog check as much as a month after clearing codes). I want to get this out of the way as soon as possible, whether that's 40 miles or 100 miles is the question. It will certainly pass smog.
