Hi All,
I'm contemplating many things to sort out/tweak the ride on my 96 900S convertable. First off it handles and corners just fine. My beef is with the chassis twist, and wallow. I really notice it these days. The car has only done 74K miles. I may be very critical, it's not that bad, but I just don't like it. Is there any way to brace the chassis?
I notice problems when hitting small bumps in the road on one side, the car and steering wheel shake at about 15 Hz (the same frequency as wheel misbalance vibration at 70 mph). It also gets thown about by gently undulating road surfaces, where other cars do not. The shocks don't seem to absorb it, they just ride over or into imperfections.
The last problem is going over larger things with both wheels, like speed bumps or larger dips that cause the whole car to wallow up and down at about 1Hz.
I'm thinking about the various suspension possibilities, and fitting harder or adjustable dampers looks like an obvious option, but my concern is that this will just cause the chassis to twist and shake more. I could be totally wrong on this. Does anyone have any experience or input they can share?
A friend of mine with the same car asked the dealership about it several times, and was told "That's how it's supposed to be" but there's so much wallow over bumps and shimmies that I just can't believe it.
I'm in the UK, so my idea of perfect road ride is probably different from you US guys, but for the record the best I ever drove (in this respect) was a new Ford Mondeo. The suspension on this thing was magic! I can't quite put my finger on it, but there was no bounce, it felt firm, you could feel each bump in the road, but it didn't actually affect anything. That's what I'm after...
