Hello. I bought a 1996 900S 5-door with about 132,600 miles about a month ago. Something that happened a few days after I bought it was that after starting the engine in the morning, it would turn off within a few minutes. The gauges and SID would turn off and the engine would die. Within a few seconds, the gauges would come on, the SID would light up, and all of the warning lights would light up like when the car was first started. It would stay on for a second or two flicker for a little bit. This would happen for about 20-30 seconds. When I try to re-start the engine, it would turn but not catch while the lights were flickering. I could also hear a clicking noise in the dash behind the steering wheel that could be a relay while this was going on, but I am not sure. After the 20-30 seconds, the car starts up fine and runs without any problems. This would happen every 3-4 morning starts.
It seemed to stop for a while if I put the key in the ignition a certain way, with the light button on my thumb, and if I had the fan off. I didn't have any problems for a couple of weeks until a few days ago when it did the same thing. The engine also died on my way to work this morning while the car was moving, after about 20 minutes of driving. I popped the clutch to restart the engine, but the gauges and SID flickered like before then was fine. One thing that I noticed when this happened was that the radio stayed on the whole time and did not turn off when the gauges and SID flickered on and off.
I have a feeling that it is the ignition switch, but wanted to know if it could be something else like an old key that is worn out and not making a good connection. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
