I hate to say it, but it sounds like your mechanic screwed you, or at the very least misdiagnosed your problem. I am pretty hard on my car and when I opened the tranny up to do my clutch, my flywheel was in good shape and didn't require resurfacing. I have about a 30 mile round-trip commute that usually turns into a 45-60 minute ordeal on the way home, basically a parking lot on the bridge - this is on top of the fact that I live in Seattle, and we have a lot of hills...

Was the work done by your dealer or a licensed indie? If they hadn't replaced the clutch cable along with the original clutch job, than that would probably explain the excessive play in the cable. I can't imagine how the pressure plate springs could have gone "limp" in such a short time, in addition to the throwout bearing going out. There's is usually some warning before the throwout bearing goes it - you'll hear bearing noise because there isn't any grease left in it (high-pitched sound when you release the clutch). The feeling of sand in your shifter sounds more like the plastic bushing failing on the shift linkage mount. If you didn't have any problems with the engine shuddering when you disengage the clutch, the flywheel should have been alright too... Also, the fact that your mechanic didn't align the shift linkage correctly in the first place makes me wonder too... it's a pretty simple procedure.

Probably too late now, but did you ask for the faulty parts back? You may at the very least be able to get a partial refund for the clutch parts because if they did indeed fail in such a short time, they may have been defective from the get-go.
