First the good news: found the leak, thanks to whoever suggested checking while the engine is running, I could not find it otherwise 'cause it was not dripping with the engine off. Turns out, the main hose going to the engine, where it attaches to the expansion tank, was rotted through, that is, not the hose, but the nipple on the expansion tank that the hose is clamped to was rotted. when I lifted out the tank to unhood the hose, the nipple part just fell off, it was ready to go, could have been a disaster if it happened on the highway.

So while I have the tank off, I'm replacing that hose, and I was able to siphon out almost a gallon of coolant by sticking a catheter into the engine where the hose attaches, and pulling out coolant with a syringe. So it'll be like a coolant flush, almost, at the same time as getting a new hose and tank.

Bad news: I need a new expansion tank, not too much $$, but I can't get one until tomorrow at the earliest, so I've been without a car since saturday night. I console myself by imagining what the dealer would have charged.
