Funky battery behavior (longish)

So Friday car #1 (1997 900SE) doesn't crank in the pm. I have to go and give it a jump. It charges enough so that I can drive it over the weekend. Car #2 (also 1997 900SE) has a good battery. Car starts quickly. On Monday we went to Charleston (90 miles away). We wanted to take car #1 since it has quieter tires and a CD changer. Since the battery is somewhat weak, I take battery from car #2 (good battery) and put it in the trunk, just in case. Car #1 starts no problem all day. When we get back I go to put the good battery in car #1 and the bad in car #2 (swap them, so she can drive #1). Now the good battery from car #2 in car #1 is dead. The weak one is still weak, but good enough. Now what the heck happened? Both cars are reading about 14.4V at idle. 12.3V when off.
Cells are not dry. Possibly some are lower than others but no exposed plates. Also, I took car #2 with the previously good battery to work this morning. 15 min on highway. That was not enough to be able to crank again right after shutting it off.
