How to remove the reverse key lock?

Hi everyone,
I've got a heck of a hard time engaging reverse gear. My mechanic says its not the shifter coupling but rather the problem is within the tranny. Apparantly there's a pin inside the tranny which is loose that prevents the car from engaging cleanly in reverse. He suggested that from neutral, put it in 5th, and jerk down to reverse, I'd have a better chance of getting to reverse. (it does help a bit, but sometimes I find myself fiddling around for 2 minutes before hitting it). This is a major major pain everytime I want to take the keys out of the car.
I guess my first question is whether my mechanic's theory makes any sense. The second question, in order to better live with the problem, is how easy is it to remove the key lock function in reverse. I want to be able to remove the key in any gear including neutral.
Thx.
