During the course of this week I changed out my front brakes and rotors, and am in the process of replacing my waterpump and those pesky waterpump pipe o-rings. If I would have followed the Haynes Manual Iwould have had a bunch of extra work. The little details are the ones that can turn a simple job into a real PITA.
Deans archived instructions for the brake retaining spring were spot on with pulling the end of the spring using a hook or wire and driving it into the hole with the tap of a hammer. I would have eventually come to this conclusion, but I would have degraded my vocabulary in the process. Haynes just said "reinstall" the spring. This was especially challenging because I used new springs that had never been streched before.
Likewise on the waterpump install... Dean stated the details (and the need for) moving the waterpipe out of the way and precisely where the fasters were, and exactly what had to be removed, nothing more. Dean also detailed how to remove the water pump and how to get the pipe with the o-rings out of the block, a tug with a pliers did the trick. Haynes was mostly gibberish in these regards and would have had me doing extra work, while not providing important details. The waterpump is still a PITA anyway you do it. And those o-rings are BOGUS, NO WONDER THESE THINGS DO NOT LAST LONG, a better design is needed.
I do have one question though...on the waterpump pipe to block install. What is the orientation of the pipe when installing to the block? There is a little shroud or diverter on the inside of the pipe and two ears (one long, one short) cast into the OD of the pipe which direction should they face for proper install? Long ear up, down, sideways? There is also a Saab P/N cast into the pipe OD. I took it off in poor lighting and did not notice the orientation when it came out. Any ideas?
