3rd gear thoughts Posted by MJM [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Talladega Convertible...., Robert, Sun, 24 Oct 2004 11:41:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This may or may not be a transmission issue. A few years ago my '95 SEt started 'crunching' slightly when shifting into 3rd gear. I had the local Saab dealer look at the car and they identified it as bad synchros on 3rd and wanted to replace the trans. The company holding the extended warranty I had wouldn't pay to replace the trans., but they would have paid to have it rebuilt. The dealer didn't want to touch the rebuild job, and after doing a lot of calling around, it seemed like none of the import-car trans shops would touch it either. Through the mechanics recommendation list on Saabnet, I found an indie shop near Pittsburgh, Dennis?/Bob? Sweeney Saab in Ligonier PA that specialized in Saab transmission rebuilds and was willing to work with the extended warranty company. I dropped the car off with them and went out of town for a long weekend. When I came back they told me that the trans was fine but that the shift linkage had been way out of adjustment. I was skeptical at first, but since then I've put something like 30-40 thousand more miles on the car, without a hint of 3rd gear crunch.
My suggestion would be to tackle the problem as follows:
>>>first, properly adjust the shift linkage ($~50)
>>>optional 1.5 - replace the trans fluid with the post-97 synthetic
>>>second - install the updated shift linkage (~$200?)
>>>third - then look at replacing or worst-case, rebuilding the trans.
regards, Mike
