Hi Bruce,
Not to get the jump on REM's response. but I second his diagnosis. I have the same issue with my '97 turbo SE., usually in cold weather. If you let the engine and transmisson warm up a bit either by idling or driving, and then stop the motor, and work the trasnsmission gear selector from 'P' to '1' several times (gently) this sometimes fixes it temporarily. The part in question is mounted to the top of the transmission, under the battery mounting plate, and as such is a pain to get to. I haven't replaced mine yet, but I believe the part runs about $225. or so. there is an excellent illustrated DIY site (do a search for Neutral Safety Switch) which details the proceedure. It's about at the limit of my patience level, and I do a fair amount of work on my car myself. Lots of tight spaces where you have to get tools into, hose removal. etc. But it is certainly doable.
Hope this helps,
Garry
