It the wires are have not hardened up or started to crack, I would just clean them and the boots and the coil face and put everything back.
You should replace the plugs perhaps too. Its all quite easy. Try it some time. You will need plugs, plug socket, gap gauge. You need a 6" extension for the spark plug socket. It would be nice to have someone show you. The cover is held on with 4 #30 torx screws, the driver for these is in the double ended screw driver set in the trunk, or was there.
Replacing the distributor can get you into a situation where you the wires mixed up. Remove that cover and sketch how the wires go with the view of the cap rotated up into the same view. If the cap has the terminals for each cylinder numbered, all the better. The distributor shaft is made so you can't get it in at the wrong index angle. The distributor is clamped in with one bolt.
You can remove the old cap, remove the new cap if attached to the new distributor, and move the wires one at a time from one cap to the other. Make sure the caps are both oriented the same. If you are not getting a new cap, just unclip it, move it aside with wires attached, replace the distributor and snap on the old cap.
You can search for 'clean the wires' for info on that. It they will wipe clean with a damp cloth that works too. Dirt makes a mess on things that can attracts dampness and creates ignition leaks. So you want to clean the wires, cap and coil face as part of preventative maintenance.
