New angle on wheel vibration

Hi all,
I know the old chestnut of wheel vibration at 65mph has been done to death, but I have a new angle on it.
My 78K miles 900S conv has had this for a while, after I gently curbed the left side. I had that side wheel balance checked and it was spot on. Still vibrated at 65mph, and it gets worse/appears with acceleration. It also needs a very smooth road, otherwise you can't feel it, or it doesn't happen.
Anyway, I swapped the right rear wheel to the right front to test the balance. The tyres were bought at the same time, and are lightly worn, but the front is slightly more worn than the rear.
Now the car vibrates at 75mph, not 65. This is really wierd. It suggests that it's not the wheel balance, and that it's related to the mass of the wheel/tyre. I can't belive the tiny increase in diameter due to wear would be enough to cause this large a change.
The change in mass with the newer tyre might cause the suspension to oscillate at a different frequency. This coupled to the fact that it appears to only show up when the wheel/suspension is not being forced around in other ways by uneven road surfaces leads me to suspect that the damper is shot, and allowing the suspension to resonate.
Anyone care to comment on this? I asked my mechanic (who hasn't driven it yet) and he felt that it was unlikely the damper had failed that badly.
Cheers
Jon
