Different question about dash lights ('96 900S)...

Dash lights work sporadically, usually not at all ('96 900S):
I pulled the radio out of my friend's dashboard to gain access to the wiring harness behind it to inspect. Sure enough, it had rub marks on it, but not deep enough to have severed any wires or to allow any of them to short onto the metal backing of the radio. I still wrapped it with cushioning to ensure it never has a problem.
In any event, I had to remove the SID to push the radio out from behind (it was really stuck in there...I was using radio removal tools as well). When I disconnected the SID, and started the car, the dash lights would come on and stay on. When I reconnected the SID, the dash lights would light up for 2 seconds, then turn off. I even tried covering the light-sensing lens (tiny clear "dot" in the top of the SID; used to control the dash lights intensity during day/night driving) with my finger and it didn't help.
Does this mean there is a problem with that light-sensing lens/circuit? Do I need to replace the SID?
I know the dash light problem is not the wiring harness now, and it is not the rheostat (dimmer switch). Has anyone heard of the SID or light-sensing circuit causing a problem? Can just the circuit be replaced, or does it need a new SID?
TIA
Joe
