Proactive battery replacement...a waste?

The guy at AutoZone couldn't believe it. I am buying a battery for a car that I drove to the store and plan on driving home with, without first installing the battery in the parking lot like all the other rednecks? (there was a guy changing his oil in his Camaro in the parking lot held up only by the OEM tire jack - Darwin rules!)
I explained to him that even though I had experienced no starting problems with my $50.00 four year old battery I did not want to be in need of a jump on what is inevitably the most miserable day of the year or in the most innopportune of places, like a dimly lit airport parking lot at midnight during a sleet storm. He thought this a novel idea.
You guys caused me to think like this, fix before break, tow, or walk home. I only average 3 years on batteries anyway before I am chasing someone around with jumper cables and I felt I was on borrowed time.
