Saab 900 1996 Rear NOISE!!!

Hi,
I am being driven, if not there already, MAD by rear noise.
It sounds much like the noise you would get from a bad set of tyres, or even a set of snow tires. So, I replaced the 2 rear tyres, which were a little choppy and during this, it was noted that my rim was bent, not surprising given the state of the roads here in Massachussetts.
The noise not being cured by the tyres, I obtained a rim from a local salvage yard (anyone want a 2 month old Saab convertible with 700 miles on the clock, just a 'little' front end damage - ouch), and of course, noise remains the same.
So;
Noise not affected by braking
Noise not affected by switching load from left to right under cornering
Noise seems to increase with speed
Noise is not grinding, more like a constant, but getting louder, hum!!
Noise really does appear to be from rear
Help anybody, any suggestions??
And to clarify a point in my own confused head, amd I right in thinking that if it were a bearing, I would hear more of a grind than a hum, and, wouldn't it be less or more noise if I put the pressure on that side of the car??
Thanks in anticipation.
Mick
