Rear calipers - seal damage

Replacing the rear brake pads I noticed that one of the visible rubber seals surrounding the piston - i.e. the seal that is basically in contact with the back of the pad when fitted - has a small tear. I'm not familiar with the inner workings of brake calipers, but I'm guessing that these particular seals are there not to keep brake fluid in, but to stop dirt entering the cylinder in which the piston is located. I realise that I will need to change it quickly if I want to save the caliper, but would it actually be dangerous to continue driving with the seal in that condition? There is no sign of any other problem with the caliper - pads evenly worn, no sign of leaks, piston moving freely. The reason I ask is that I really don't need the expense of replacing calipers right now, which unfortunately is not a DIY job for me. I was hoping to be able to drive the car for another couple of months until I can afford to have the work done properly, even if that means slowly wrecking the defective caliper as the dust creeps in. Feel free to tell me that this is complete madness. I'll be grateful for the advice anyway!
