I have seen many people post about deceleration noise coming from the transmission/transaxle of NG900's and possibly 9-3's. My 97 900SE started to develop the noise at about 60K and I recently resolved the noise at 77K miles. It is a "growl/internal grinding" noise that occurs on deceleration (on my car it was loudest at about 35mph in second, going down hill).
I did a hydraulic clutch conversion and at the same time the two components that I changed that could have resolved the problem were: Front left tri-pod bearing (89-50-628: $150 retail) and the drive shaft support bearing (42-38-432: $58.00 retail). I think it is the drive shaft support bearing. If the transmission is not being changed, the only way to do this bearing is to remove the support bracket that also serves as the alternator support bracket. Pound off the inner driver, pop the drive shaft out of the differential and then drive the bearing out of the housing. Press the bearing off of the drive shaft, and, as Hanes manuals say, installation is reverse of removal.
Note: Check the front right motor mount to see if it is sagging. This mount is crucial to the alignment height of the drive shaft to the bearing.
