Coolant, coolant, coolant... Posted by Clay McNeely [Email] (#497) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Clay McNeely) on Fri, 3 Dec 2004 08:08:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hello, everyone. I have a few questions regarding the coolant in my 1996 Saab 900 SE Turbo. I've done quite a bit of research on this board, but continue to find differing views and opinions, so maybe we can all come to some sort of agreement this time around.
First of all, the car currently has a green coolant in it. I don't know when the system was last flushed, nor when coolant was last added. The coolant is slowly leaking somewhere, but I have yet to check all of the hoses and clamps. As a point of reference, my low speed fan was not working through the majority of the summer and it got quite hot here. Having that said, would the absence of the low speed fan cause coolant to leak elsewhere? The temperature gauge never got above half, but I'm just thinking about all of the possibilities. Any other ideas?
At this point and time, I have two options. I can either top off the coolant with a similar product or I can flush the entire system and put in whatever is best. Is the green coolant acceptable, and if so, where can I find something similar? If I stick with the green coolant, should I just top off the reservoir or go ahead and flush out the system? If I need to switch coolants, what type should I get and where can I get it? I know eEuroparts has the blue Saab coolant, but I'm still not exactly sure which one it is. Hopefully all of that made sense.
My last question is dealing with flushing the system. What is the best way to flush the system? I've tried looking up the procedure here, but haven't come up with a definite outline of the process. I'm fairly competent mechanically, so hopefully it's not a terribly difficult job. If needed, I can just buy the coolant and have a local shop flush the system for me.
I realize this posting contains a lot of questions and not much organization. I'm just getting tired of clearing out the "low coolant" warning from the SID and I have some spare time this weekend to take care of things. If clarification or additional information is needed, please feel free to let me know. Otherwise, I greatly appreciate any advice, suggestions, and/or feedback you may be able to offer. Thanks in advance, drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
