I just did this over Thanksgiving to my son's 900S. Rather than disconnecting the rad hose, I used the plastic drain plug on the lower corner of the rad. It took a 13mm extended socket to get it loose and I had to deal with some interference from the air injection valve that's mounted down there. Once I had a hose on the drain plug it was easy to capture all the old coolant.
The point about over tightening is good. I chewed up the gasket and it leaked so I had to go out and buy another one. The housing was corroded so I scraped off the surface with a screwdriver. A little gasket sealer and less torque on the bolts made for a good seal. One curious thing I noticed was an indentation in the head at the top of the mounting surface. The base the thermostat mounts on is roughly 1/4" in diameter except for this area at the top. For about a half inch at the top, the diameter is only about an eight of an inch. This probably contributed to the poor seal, but I'm wondering if this indentation is on all 900s or did a someone break off this section? I couldn't tell by looking at it and it didn't seem to be a "fresh" break.
