First time my belt failed, it started to shred, causing a sound you could call whirring as the rough edge of the belt was running through the pulleys. Frayed edge of the belt was clearly visible, even with a flashlight in the dark.
At that point, the water pump was still being driven, but the belt was slipping badly, and the alternator stopped working. Car was running on battery, voltage was low, headlights weak, engine running rough, CEL was on. Less than 20 miles later, the belt broke completely. (no power steering and no power brakes at that point, could be hard for weaker or older person to control) Replaced belt and one pulley...
Less than a year later, the new belt broke. Replaced belt and both idler pulleys... no problems since then.
Check the waterpump seals (o-rings), for leaks at the same time, a seal needed to be replaced/tightened on mine. Not sure if the leak was caused by the belt failing, but worth checking while you are in there.
