Mobil 1 is not a cure all Posted by SLAAB [Email] (#1275) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SLAAB) on Wed, 8 Dec 2004 23:31:43 In Reply to: The engine flush question .... again! (long), Charlie, Wed, 8 Dec 2004 13:29:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have been using Mobil 1 5W30 since 10k. With consistent 5k oil/filter changes.
While it is one of the best oils in the market it will still varnish and produce sludge.
I used Berryman B12 chemtool to flush the engine before my last oil change (100k). When I drained the crankcase, a whole lot of gunk came out. The drain plug itself has been stained with varnish for a long time and was not cleaned by the flush. Even with the crankcase drained there was still gunk in the engine. I suspect a lump of gunk had worked its way into one of the lifters and was the cause of engine ticking that came on just after the oil change and went away 1500 miles later.
With the advice of Dean on this board, I will flush again at the next oil change but upgrade my oil to Mobil 1 0W40 for the higher mileage.
