You don't say what kind of a car you have, so it's hard to give advice without knowing whether you have a 6-cylinder, a 4-cyl turbo or a normally aspirated 4 cyl.
In all cases, I'd stay away from a salvage unit because you might be inheriting someone else's problem. In all cases, you can have a muffler shop cut out the stock cat and weld in a free-flow cat (you can pick up one cheap at summit racing.) They just need to weld in a bung after the cat for the rear O2 sensor. If you have a turbo, you'd do yourself a favor by mating that new free-flow cat with a bigger downpipe....
