It isn't a bad engine, or particularly slow. Sure it isn't as fast as a 2.0 litre turbo, but it quite spirited and fun to drive. Some people really like to bash these engines, but I doubt they have spent much time with them. I have one and if you learn its peculiarities it is quite capable, not to mention the much lower insurance costs. These engines are higher compression than the turbo and therefore require the same amount of maintenance. It is imperative that oil changes were completed on time, I would certainly make sure of this. Oil sludging in this engine is a mortal problem. I would recomend the manual transmission in any 900. I know that it is more to worry about with the clutch cable and all, but it is worth while in driving pleasure. If you know your car you will know when to replace the cable. I wouldn't not recomend a 1996 model, but if a 1997, or better yet a 1998 is available it would certainly be a better choice. I would even consider one of these later models if they had higher milage. The later 900 had better seats, bigger rear brakes, upgraded front suspension (post 1995 1/2) better shift linkage and the 1998 models had a hydraulic clutch mechanism that is both more reliable and easier in action. A 1996 900 is a fine car if it has been maintained properly, as with every European car.
