Ball joints and stress cracks

Hi,
I was looking at a '99 9-3 yesterday. I have a '98 900S. My ball joints are mint. The rubber boots look really clean and flawless. I bought my car used and it had 50k on it. Now it has 64k. It could have lived in a rust free area?
My question is, Can one determine anything from a ball joint that has stress cracks in it? This car has 70k from the Boston area. Is it just road salt that eats away at it?
Do ball joints normally last about 90k? (you have to buy the whole control arm when they go, right?)
Thanks,
-Peter
