To buy or not to buy - soft top

Whilst venting my frustration, at least internally, with my 900 and its missing hood cable, I relaxed myself by searching online for other vehicles to threaten it with, when I happened to come across a 1996 900S Conv. The car has done 67,000 miles, comes with leather and here is the crunch, a soft top that is not functioning!
Given that the top is watertight, just doesn't operate, I am minded to consider buying the car at the $2,500 being asked and treat it like a hard top, until such time as I feel like giving myself (if ever) the trauma of a repair quote. It has some 70,000 less miles than mine for the same year, two doors instead of 4 (I prefer that) and looks nice.
Anyone want to comment on the above, and feel free to question my naive logic!! As an addition, if I do so, I have a 1996 900 with the hood cable gone, for sale for $2,500 in Mass. Complete history. Well, it never hurts to mention it, surely? :)
Thanks in advance, Mick.
