Hi Vlad,
thanks for your input. I was really expecting to find a leak somewhere, it really seems the most obvious choice. I've tried waggling the inlet manifold in case there is any play in it that allows a gap. No dice.
However, I guess if the gasket has a gap, but the bolts are tight this wouldn't show up with my method.
The only thing I can offer against this is that I tried another dodgy trick, namely running the engine without the MAF and resonator and blocking the intake to the throttle body. The engine stalled and there was no hissing of air anywhere, which I'd expect for a large air leak. Not very scientific, I know.
As far as HT leads, they certainly look fine (the indy mech didn't suggest replacing them, though he replaced the cap and rotor), and I've tried the old "spark in the dark" trick which has allowed me to transform dodgy cars in the past. No signs of any arcing.
As I replied to Dean, the spark is strong enough to jump a big gap from HT lead to dizzy and still run the same.
Last night I cleaned the thick film hybrid MAF sensor (which didn't look dirty) and again, it seems to have helped a little, but that could be anything.
I'll keep looking while I await my OBDII kit. Hopefully the snapshots for the CEL codes will provide some info. When the indy mech attached the TECH2 I wasn't getting the CEL, so no issues were reported to help him.
Cheers
Jon
