Had to do short belt mode today because the top idler pulley and belt desintegrated on Christmas day (Saab 900, '96 N/A 2.0L engine). Today I got the pulley. Here in England you cannot get easily the american length for the belt but I managed to source a 2475mm belt which was close to the length suggested in this forum (2466-2480mm). For anybody interrested here in England you can also source a 2463mm belt, which I recon will actually fit better giving the tensioner more adjusting if the belt stretches by any chance. The 2475 belt is slightly thicker then the original belt which I hope is OK, so time will tell. The good news for me is that it works, and also the engine sounds much quiter. A knocking noise that I had for at least the time I had the car which I thought must have been related to the timing chain has also gone. So I recon if the idler pulleys start getting noisy expect them to fail anytime.
