Thermostats wear out, and you notice it more in winter Posted by Peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Is it just me..., Brice, Sun, 2 Jan 2005 15:02:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I think it is just an item with poor design that goes out with age, but better failing open than closed.
You could be driving with one stuck open for months and not know it until cold weather sets in. In freezing weather the radiator and engine temps drop quickly on the highway, and 'suddenly' you notice the gage never gets out of the blue zone. When it gets cold, people notice there is something wrong with the engine temperature, or low mpg, or both, and start posting about it.
If you are not inclined to do it yourself in the middle of winter, it should cost less to replace if you flush coolant at the same time and bring the part with you. That will cut the labor in half, because the radiator is being drained anyway. The part alone costs $10 on eEuroparts and $30 from the dealer.
I would worry more about the water pumps, the idler pulleys, the DI cassette, AC compressor, SID etc. All more expensive items, and all seem to fail on the older NG900's. Not to mention headgaskets and loose engine bolts (!) So basically you have to budget for all that along with any other big plans you have for the car.
