Popping sound is probably a loose subframe. Retorque all the bolts.
Engine mounts are probably bad if you are over 100K. My transmission mount was sagging 1 inch!!! And my rear center mount was broken in half, yet the car had no really noticible symptoms, except when I replaced them it sure felt alot tighter, and the shifting, of course, improved.
