Transmission / Linkage Mystery

I have a 1995 900S with about 149,000 miles on it. Two weeks ago, after driving about 12 miles home from work and using all gears, I could not get it into 1st gear. What should have been 1st was really 3rd. I could get it into reverse, and didn’t try the other gears. When I thought I had it in 3rd gear the gearshift lever was very loose (flopped from side to side), but maybe it was really in neutral and I thought I had it in gear. I had heard no noise at all and didn’t have any indication of the problem before it occurred.
I figured it was the linkage, but could find nothing obvious. I had it towed to a shop where they also agreed the linkage (including the bushings under the gearshift lever and rubber coupler near the transmission) were okay. So they pulled the transmission ($300), opened it up (another $200), and reported today that no problem was found. There was no visible wear on any of the gears. The flywheel, clutch friction disc, and clutch cable are also okay. That doesn’t seem to leave much else that could go wrong, and the shop mechanic is totally stumped. Anybody out there ever have a problem like this?
