Can I get rid of alarm system ?

Hi,
I'm a new owner of a 97 900 SE turbo. The car is sweet, but from what I've read here, the anti-theft system is a real nightmare. Having an alarm system like this (in a $2200) car :-} is almost worse than having the car stolen !
I know that (most of the time ...) the alarm system won't activate if I lock using the key, but I'd really love to just disable the alarm permanently. Someone posted once about grounding a certain pin of the alarm control unit -- has anyone actually made that work ? Is there any other safe way to accomplish this ? Can the dealer program the alarm system never to come on ?
Thanks,
Jeff
