Oil Cooler Not Connected?!

I was underneath my car trying to replace a foglight when I noticed two hoses that had been severed. They looked to lead to the oil cooler and the lines coming from the engine had been spliced together. My guess is the previous owner of my vehicle had a leak in the cooler, and rather than pay the $350 or so for a new one, just literally cut it out of the picture.
Now, my question is, is this going to cause any damage to my engine over time? I've had the car for about 10,000 miles, and who knows when the oil cooler was removed... I haven't noticed any problems related to high oil temp that I know of and that includes a decently hot summer in Baltimore. Would it be beneficial to add an aftermarket unit? The original had a temperature controlled valve, I think. Is that in the cooler itself or the connector on the engine block (or somewhere else)? Thanks for all the help and advice!
