Can't imagine the connector at the instrument panel being dirty, but for what it's worth:
To get at the instrument cluster, you have to get the steering column shrouds off, the SID and the radio out, and then remove the plastic panel around the instruments, which includes the wires to the small display built into the top edge of the panel.
I believe you have to remove the SID and the radio because they snap into the panel, at least the guy I watched once did that first. (Haynes agrees with that, and also suggests disconnecting power at the battery).
SID is easy, it is held by four plastic snaps (two on top and two on the bottom) you can use two M4 screws in the removal holes, and wiggle it free. Not so sure about the radio, I believe you have to buy something called a DIN removal tool to get it out.
