Hi everyone, first time posting here.

I have 1996 Saab 900. It's not a turbo or a V6, rather it is the normal 2.3L version of the car. Anyway, it's getting up there in milage and may be nearing it's life expectency at 160,000 miles but I'd like to keep it going longer if possible, but can't afford to keep taking it to the dealer for every little thing. I have friends that have helped me with DIY things in the past and could probably get their help again, but one of them told me to ask on a Saab board (so here I am) which belts should be replaced at this milage?

I read many postings but am confused: does my engine have 2 belts? One outside for accessories (called the serpentine belt) and one inside the engine for Timing? That is: is there a serpentine belt AND a timing belt? If so should he help me to renew both of these?

I read with horror (a lot of posts came up) that the V6 model appears to have an achilles heel in the timing "CHAIN" so hope I don't have that issue in my 2.3L.

Thank you (SO MUCH!) in advance for your help on the two-belt-or-one-replacement question.

PS there are at least 3 other Saabs in my apartment building alone so I could find out who they belong to and ask for their help on some things too, but my friend is a pretty good home mechanic if that makes a difference to whether you think this stuff is DIY or not.
