Belt failure, what to expect...

Belt blew last night, I'm assuming it's the serp (large belt hanging under car). Lost power steering, alternator stopped as did the cooling system for the engine. Was doing about 65 and had to go about a mile before I could safely get off the highly and onto a portion of the shoulder that had room for me (i.e. not covered in a couple feet of snow). And yes the temp gauge pegged itself to the top. What's the worse case scenario here? I've read things about the idler pulley and what not. Could I have done damage by driving after it blew (head)? I had the car towed, it's at the mechanic. Not fortunate enough to have the space to DIY (street parking in a major city). Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions. The thing that sucks the most is that I replaced the serp in my Jetta two weeks ago because it was looking bad...
