95 S Convertible consideration, no reverse

Greetings loyal NG900 fanatics!
I lay my ceremonial shredded 2.3 balance shaft sprocket (from my 92 9000) at your feet as an offering....and now I ask for your wisdom....
I'm considering (or am I?) a 95 convertible that seems to be available at a good price, thinking I might be able to address its problem and later sell it for a little upgrading-my-life money. (Only a little....)
So, here are details as far as I know them: 95 S convertible, 5sp, no reverse, black w/tan leather, top is in good condition, 130k on clock.
In doing a search on this board, I learn that there's a distinction between the trashed-transmission no-reverse, and the need-new-linkage no-reverse. My question is, can I tell by asking a few key questions over the phone which type of no-reverse I'm looking at?
And while you're at it, what other horrible attributes should I be alert to?
Then, how much would a nice, good-running example be worth in your opinion, and how much would you advise spending on a fixer-upper?
If my offering is not enough, I might still have the dented piston from that same 9000 2.3....
Thanks!
