Removal of Hatch Struts

I have a new pair of rear hatch struts (original equipment from Europarts) to install. The old ones just packed it in.
It looks like putting the new ones in should be fairly straightforward. I assume that I just push them onto the pins on the hatch.
But how do I get the old ones off without damaging anything? Should I pry off the little clips at the top and bottom with a screwdriver before trying to remove the struts? Or do I just pull on the struts to pull them off the mounting posts?
Thanks. Searching the bulletin board did not find any specific instructions about this.
