A followup on my adventures in heated seat reapair.
Friday was my third attempt at getting the seat heaters to come
alive. The fix for the drivers seat was quite easy. The idiot who
reinstalled it after the previous fix (that, um, would be
me) didn't quite click the 2-wire connector together fully, and it
had come undone. After removing the leather covering, clicking the
connector together, and replacing the leather covering (2 of the three
previous steps being completely unneccesary) everything was fine.
The passenger seat's immobility, as folks here suggested, was simply a
matter of replacing the relay which had fallen out. I read about the
horror stories and devious contraptions used to re-install this relay,
but having already disasembled the drivers seat, I didn't have a hard
time locating the socket by hand. Once I felt where the socket was,
getting the relay in was fairly straightforward (i.e., completely
impossible to see under there, but no mechanical obstructions).
Now that the seat was movable once again, I was able to remove it and
bring it indoors. I took off the leather seat cover, checked that
there was a 1.5 ohm resistance, and replaced the leather seat cover (2
of the three previous steps being completely unnecesary).
I took a ride in the mountains, left the heat on low, and verified
that indeed the driver's seat heater works. I was a little suprised
that it doesn't warm up that often -- a nice pulse of heat, followed
by long stretches of slightly noticeable warmth. But it wan't really
all that cold out. This morning, OTOH, it was in the 20's and breezy,
and *man* was it nice to feel the warmth ! My guess is that the
passenger side works, but given the intermittent nature of the heat
I can't be sure. I'll have to spend some time sitting in it.
Thanks to all who have posted helpful info and encouragement ! This
board makes a Saab an even nicer car to own.
