If those are original shocks, they need to be replaced now. When you do that, replacement of the strut upper mounts are a must. Weak shocks create some nasty steering artifacts when making fast or spirited lane changes. That is caused by undamped body roll which creates some roll steer issues that, for me, created a sick feeling... hard to describe, sort of like the vehicle was drunk and not quite stable.
Rear sway bar is cheap and easy to install and has a huge cost/benefit for handling. If you want to DIY the struts but need to wait for better weather for a weekend, fitting the sway bar first will eliminate the roll steer problem described above, and bring some relief and general improvement.
As you improve handling, the tires may not be up to the task, and non-performance tires may not take you where you want to go. Ditto for braking. Most every braking setup has performance limited by the tire patch, not the pads/rotor/brake-lines etc. -So reducing stopping distances is simply about tire choice and little else-
So thats a start and go from there. You can DIY the struts, but it is a big job and not for all. There are other things that you can do, but thats the foundation.
You can go a long way on the 16" wheels and stock SE springs. You can improve the suspension by cutting down the length of the bump stops while fitting the front strut inserts. That will increase the suspenstion travel and allow the shocks to have more travel in which to work before hitting the stops. Koni adjustable Sports are the gold standard and no one regrets the performance, but they are expensive. $600 or so. But with DIY labor, the costs are not so high compared to dealer installing factory parts, plus sales tax.
