I has been done, see post below. There are other posts about cracked oil coolers also. I read someplace that Saabs have been shipped to some countries w/o oil coolers, but I am not sure that applies to this model.
$400 is only a few dollars over list (p/n 4357042, genuinesaab.com), but if you need the hoses that go with it, I believe they are another $250/set.
I believe the oil cooler is only on the turbo, not on the NA engine. No doubt to try to alleviate overheating in the turbo engine, so while I would think you can run without it for a while, long-term it would be a bad idea. You could bypass it, take it off, and have someone weld it back together (that is what I would try).
Are you sure it is the oil cooler? I assumed mine was leaking, but it turned out to be oil from the power steering high pressure hose/cooling line.
