I rebuilt the manual tranny on my '95 900 SE.

My first step was to purchase a Manual Gearbox Service Manual from eEurpoarts (part/code 0354886, $13.90). This is mandatory, it can't emphasized too much. You won't be able to disassemble/reassemble the tranny without this manual.

You may need help and/or access to a special gear puller to get 5th gear off the output shaft. The two halves of the tranny case can't be split without this gear being removed. This step was my biggest problem. Fortunately, I have a friend who owns a tranny repair shop, and he assisted me with this step. You also need a dial indicator to reassemble 5th gear on the output shaft. If you don't have one, they can be purchased for $20-$30 from a place like Harbor Freight Tools.

There are two part numbers for the reverse gear. The proper one depends on whether your tranny's serial no. begins with the letter "M". Once you have the tranny case opened up, replacing that gear should present no problem. The two p/n's that my manual shows for the reverse gear are 87-43-460, and 87-46-364.

I'm not sure that there is an upgraded version of reverse gear per se. There is however, an upgraded version of the lever that engages the gear. The new lever moves the fulcrum point slightly off center, making engaging the gear more positive. I believe this is the primary cause of reverse gear failures. I replaced mine when I had the tranny disassembled, though that wasn't the reason for my rebuild. My reverse gear was okay. You may get by replacing only that lever, much less costly than the entire gear assembly.

If you don't have the Saab EPC, send me an email, and I will attach exploded drawings and parts lists of the tranny.
