I had the same symptoms - smell in car unless I used recirc mode.
For unrelated reasons, I was poking around w/ my PCV stuff, and everything just broke into pieces at the slightest touch. Prolly a good idea to just replace all. I got the "Y" fitting and rubber grommet that goes into the valve cover, and the inline check valve from eEuroparts. Also the larger rubber hose that goes from the Y to the nearby metal hose end; this part wasn't brittle, but was swollen and very loose-fitting. I used a hose clamp on the new one to be sure. The smaller nipple on the Y takes 5/32 vacuum hose from a local parts store (or order 4mm ID) for a couple of inches, then the check valve (arrow points away from Y fitting) and from there to a nipple on the throttle body. The nipple is on the side of the TB facing the car's front, on the lower right. If there are any other vacuum lines that are the slightest bit stiff, now is the time to replace them. The large one (I used 7/32) from the TB passenger side to the strut tower via a check valve was cracked open on my car. I used metal sping clips (from parts store) to hold these on.
It's hard to say if this is what fixed the fumes smell issue for me, as I also replaced the exhaust system at the same time -- mine was chock full of rusted out holes. But it *definitely* helped liven up the throttle response. And it was cheap (for a Saab, anyway) and simple to do. I'd say anybody over 100k should just up and do this.
