Every few months mine started rattling again; I'd take it apart and try to clean and lube it.
I have disassembled it most of the way, but the wires are just so tight that I don't do that anymore. Now, just a canned air duster and Q-tips. Early on I used a couple drops of light machine oil. When the sound kept coming back I tried White Lightning, a wax based bike lube - bad move!!! In the cold it turns hard and makes the noise worse.
More recently I tried to figure out exactly what causes the rattling. This took some time to discover but what I found is that the entire fan assembly moves in and out in a direction parallel to the axle. It is as if the axle is not long enough. In the process of trouble shooting this I took it apart and put it back together again a few times and then, strangely (I have no explanation) one time the play wasn't there - the fan would spin freely but there was no more play. I immediately re-installed it and tested it. No noise. No noise since. Weird.
