The battery was probably not fully charged, and it can take a cycle or two before you get the full reserve out of a new one.
Autozone will test your alternator for free, but most likely there was not a full charge in the battery.
Not sure what alternator came in the '95 6-cylinder, but all alternators put out less current at lower rpm. The Bosh 90A alternator is specified at 6000 rpm. At 1800 it makes 45A, and at idle probably only half that. Your running lights probably use around 10 amps... So, it is easy to undercharge even a small battery. If the alternator brushes are a little too worn, it can show up in lower charge current too.
In theory Bosch alternators have replacable brushes. There are alternator brush kits for older Saabs. For some reason these are not available at retail for the newer (NG) cars. You have to replace the voltage regulator assembly which comes with brushes for about $75, or a rebuilt alternator for around $180-200.
