The problem is the ball joints are "pressed" into the lower control arms. Therefore, if one or both are shot, the control arms would most likely be replaced.
Control arms (I believe) are in the neighborhood of $150 each, but someone would have to correct me if I'm wrong, and you may also want to check out one of the sponsors (eEuro or SaabSite) for pricing. Dealer cost would be higher.
So you are looking at anywhere in the neighborhood of $200 for parts, and I think it is about 1 and 1/2 hours of work so another $100-150 in labour charges. So at the dealer $390 is about "book" value or the amount anyone would expect to pay at a dealership. Any indy would be much better, since DIY is not the easiest (although it may be easier if replacing the entire arm) and it's cold here (not sure where you are).
