I removed something from my car -- I think was the turbo silencer <g>.
Anyway, from under the car, remove the plastic access panels (8 or 10 hex head screws). Then remove the metal pipe that runs from the turbo to the intercooler; it is held by hose clamps at each end to short rubber ell tubes. One of the hose clamps (drivers side) was installed in a way that made access next to impossible; this may not be an issue if yours isn't as rusted as mine was. I used a sawzall (very carefully !) to cut through the barrell of the clamp w/o damaging the rubber tube below. Once the tube is off, the silencer can be removed by yanking it out w/ pliers, screwdriver, or whatever. It isn't a plug that fills the tube as I had imagined, but rather a thin sleeve about 8" long that snugs against the ID of the tube.
I've heard of someone who removed it intact, but it's easier to just rip it out in pieces. Replace the tube using new hose clamps.
Frankly, I was kinda disappointed, 'cause I don't think it really makes much of a difference unless you're trying to squeeze that last 0.02 sec off your 1/4 mile. But hey, it is easy to do, especially if you're already doing work under the car.
cheers,
jeff
good luck.
