Although it's a "little dangerous", I have personally seen DI cassettes tested on the bench at the Saab training center. Basically you just put four spark plugs in the cassette and ground the tip of each plug back to the battery with some beefy wires. Hook up the ground connections with the cassette unplugged and the car turned off (obviously).
I wouldn't stand too close and it's probably a good idea to keep it away from the fuel soaked engine compartment (pulling the fuse for the fuel pump would be a good idea). Then have someone else lightly crank over the engine while you watch for sparks.
Important note: the DI Cassette will discharge a cascade of sparks about 10 seconds after switching off the engine!! You can hear this as a BUZZING SOUND when you switch off the engine. It does this to clean off carbon deposits from the spark plugs. Make sure you're not touching any part of it during the entire time! Wait a minute and then unplug the DIC and then remove the ground wires from the plugs.
Oh, and there is no relay to the DIC that I know of... There are starter and fuel pump relays as well as the alarm ECU immobilization but if your car is cranking over then all that is working.
Even though the car ONLY has 34K that DIC is still 10 years old... If it's the original then it's probably DOA. Get a new one from an online parts vendor for around $300 and install it yourself. It's the EASIEST DIY job there is! Heck, a lot of people keep one as a spare in their trunk as "roadside assistance". It beats calling a tow truck and paying the dealer an hour of labor to turn four screws, pull the DIC, put the new one in and tighten it back down.
