Pre-hydraulic clutch, or those with a cable clutch, suffered long and hard. The combination of a lousy shit linkage from 94-97/98 and the cable clutch made for many problems to many manual transmission drivers. My problem is I cannot engage reverse smoothly. The problem has been diagnosed as a dragging flywheel, whatever that means, or a bad reverse gear. Since during my last manual transmission oil change I located some small amount of metal stuck to the magnetic drain plug, I think is the later.
I have to replace my transmission because I have exhausted all other possible explanations as to why sometimes I cannot get into reverse gear. Apparently sometime after the 96 the reverse gear and reverse gear synchro were upgraded. What exactly changed, I do not know, but there is a "better" version of this reverse gear somewhere out there.
How I am going to go about it, is still something I think about frequently. My transmission problem is NOT a pre-emptive strike. Is something that is needed. Even if it is only to correct a problem with the clutch.
