I replaced my exhaust (cat back) w/ oem (Starla) parts. The exhaust design is very nice and easy to work with. Only hitch for me was rusted bolts, but it was very easy to cut through the old clamps w/ a Sawzall, taking care not to cut into the pipe below.
The flexpipe has a woven mesh over it for decorative/protective purposes, but the real guts of it are a very thin-walled accordian-like structure. It's hard to imagine this *not* wearing out rapidly. And you really can't see it coming because of the mesh covering. When I pulled mine (my system was *very* corroded), I bent the flex pipe in half w/ my hands and it just opened up and crumbled.
I'd suggest just replacing yours for peace of mind. But if your current system is not very rusty, one thing you might try is going under and removing just the flex pipe (any segment can be removed without removing the others !) and inspecting it -- bend it back and forth a little, etc.
